Dirt for Motocross and BMX Tracks

Track dirt has a harder job than most fill. It has to hold its shape under a bike, take landing after landing, and firm back up after rain. Get the material wrong and you're rebuilding the same jump every weekend.

Track heritage

We know this ground better than most

American Dirt Delivery is owned by Jerry Surber III, whose grandfather, Jerry Sr., founded multiple motocross tracks in Texas and promoted races in the Astrodome. His father, Jerry Jr., raced motocross professionally. Jerry grew up on those tracks and started running the front-end loader that maintained them when he was nine.

The right material

What Makes Good Track Dirt

Clay content. Clay holds its form when it dries and packs down under repeated impact, which is what a jump face, a berm and a landing all need. Loose, sandy material won't hold an edge.

That's why most track builders order our fill dirt. It's clay-heavy, it hardens as it dries and it holds its shape. It does get muddy when wet, then firms back up as it dries out. Once grass takes on the outside banks, they hold in place.

Plan your build

How Much Dirt Does a Track Need?

It depends entirely on your layout and how big you build, so measure rather than guess.

Work out each feature on its own. Measure its length, width and height in feet, multiply them, and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. That treats the feature as a solid box, which gives you an upper figure. A simple ramp with one sloped face and one vertical back uses about half of that.

Worked example

A jump 20 ft long, 12 ft wide and 4 ft high

  • As a box: 20 × 12 × 4 = 960 cubic feet, or 35.6 cubic yards
  • As a simple ramp: about half, so roughly 18 cubic yards

≈ 18 cubic yards

Add up every feature, then add 10–15% for compaction. Jump faces get packed hard, and the dirt goes down as it does.

Our dirt calculator handles flat areas like pads and start straights.

Delivery

How Delivery Works on a Track Build

Track builds rarely arrive as a single drop. We deliver on a continual daily basis between 8am and 5pm until your full order is in, so the loads can be spread across your build rather than dumped in one pile.

Tell us your total yardage and where on the property you want each load, and we'll plan the drops around the build. Every order is a minimum of 20 cubic yards, and most track work runs well past that. Ask us about larger orders.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of dirt is best for a motocross track?

Clay-heavy fill dirt. It holds a jump face and packs down under repeated landings. Sandy or loose material won't keep its shape.

Can I build a motocross track in my backyard?

Many people do. Measure each feature, calculate the volume and add 10–15% for compaction. Check local zoning and any HOA restrictions before the first load arrives.

Does the dirt need to be compacted?

Yes. Loose dirt won't hold a jump face. Pack each feature as you build it, and expect it to settle as you do.

Do you deliver to track sites?

Yes, by dump truck or 18-wheeler. Deliveries run daily between 8am and 5pm until your full order is in.

What's your minimum order?

20 cubic yards.
