Dirt delivery in Austin
The Balcones Escarpment splits Austin: expansive Blackland clay east, limestone and caliche west. A slab on the east side wants select fill in 6 to 8 inch lifts, a Hill Country lot wants imported topsoil and a level bench. Gravel is available here for drives and base.
Which material do I need in Austin?
In Austin the fault line under the city decides the material. East of the escarpment, on Blackland clay, a slab gets built on an imported select fill pad in 6 to 8 inch compacted lifts, because the clay swells and shrinks too much to build on directly. West, on limestone and caliche with a skin of rocky soil, the orders become imported topsoil for anything that grows and fill to build a level bench on a slope. Gravel covers drives and base across both sides.
What is the ground under Austin made of?
The Balcones Escarpment runs straight through Austin, and it splits the city into two construction problems. East of the fault line, through the eastern suburbs and out toward Manor and Pflugerville, the ground is Blackland Prairie clay, dark and highly expansive, and slabs there get built on imported pads for the same reason they do in Dallas.
West of the fault, toward the Hill Country and Lakeway, the ground turns to Edwards and Glen Rose limestone with a caliche cap and a skin of thin rocky soil. Austin chalk and limestone sit close to the surface, excavation is a rock job rather than a dirt job, and there is little native topsoil to work with. Which side of the escarpment you are on decides whether your problem is a moving slab or a lot with no soil on it.
What do people buy dirt for here?
Through the eastern half of the metro, on Blackland clay, a slab wants a select fill pad placed in 6 to 8 inch compacted lifts on top of the native ground. It is the standard method across the expansive clay belt and it is the largest use of bulk fill on this side of Austin.
West of the fault, a new lot is often rock and caliche with almost nothing that will grow. Imported topsoil for beds and lawns, and fill to build a level envelope on a sloping rocky lot, are the common orders where the native ground gives you neither soil nor a flat place to build.
Gravel is a normal driveway finish on acreage around Dripping Springs and out past the suburbs, and a compacted base sits under concrete drives and flatwork across the metro. Both are sold by the cubic yard, and the right one depends on whether the gravel is the surface or the base.
Austin lots on the clay side settle and lose their fall, and lots on the rock side often never had a workable grade. Bringing a yard back to positive drainage away from the slab, or building a buildable bench on a slope, both take fill in volume, and both are cheaper than the foundation work they prevent.
What do the local material names mean?
Austin runs on two vocabularies at once, the Central Texas clay terms east of the fault and the Hill Country rock terms west of it, and your address decides which one applies.
The compactable, spec-driven fill used to build pads over the Blackland clay on the eastern side. Plans name a plasticity index ceiling and a compaction percentage against a Proctor test. It is the defining structural material on the clay side of the metro.
The Cretaceous rock west of the fault, close to the surface and often exposed in cuts. It makes excavation a rock job rather than a dirt job and leaves little native soil, which is why western lots import both topsoil and fill.
The cemented calcium-carbonate hardpan found in the western soils. It packs hard and is sold cheaply as a base, but it drains poorly and turns greasy wet, so it is not a substitute for engineered fill under a slab.
Crushed rock by the cubic yard, used as a driveway surface on acreage and as a compacted base under concrete drives and flatwork. The right product depends on whether the gravel is the surface or the base. Gravel is available in this market.
The bulk mineral subsoil for volume: raising a low yard, backfilling, levelling. Clay-heavy east of the fault and thinner and rockier to the west, where it also goes into building a level envelope on a sloping lot.
Why does the east or west side change the whole job?
The Balcones fault is not a line on a map so much as the reason two Austin lots a few miles apart can need opposite methods. East of it, the Blackland clay swells and shrinks with its moisture, so a slab wants an imported select fill pad compacted in lifts to a specified density, and on an engineered job the compaction specification rather than the material price decides whether the pad passes.
West of it, the problem is not a moving slab, it is a lot made of rock with almost no soil and rarely a flat place to build. There the fill goes into cutting and filling a level bench, and the topsoil goes into making anything grow. A method that worked on a job across town may be the wrong method for yours, which is worth remembering when you compare two contractors.
Access west of the fault is the practical constraint. Steep driveways cut into limestone, narrow Hill Country roads and rock ledges can keep an 18-wheeler out entirely and push the job onto smaller dump trucks. Describe the grade and the approach when you order so we size the truck to the site.
How does scheduling and access work here?
Austin has grown faster than almost any market we run, and haul distance across a spread-out metro is a real part of the price. Standard orders run 1 to 3 days from stock, very large orders of around 500 loads or more can be sourced to the cheapest supply, and gravel is available here alongside the three soil materials.
Access west of the escarpment is the constraint people underestimate. Steep driveways cut into limestone, narrow Hill Country roads and rock ledges can keep an 18-wheeler out entirely, which turns the job into more trips on smaller trucks. Describe the approach and the grade when you order so we size the truck to the site.
How many yards will my Austin job take?
A pad on the east side is the volume job. A 40 foot by 50 foot pad raised 12 inches is about 74 cubic yards in place, or 89 to 93 ordered once a compaction allowance for lifts is applied. Ordering the in-place figure is the usual reason a pad runs short on the last lift.
A west-side lot runs differently. Topsoil for a 4,000 square foot lawn at 4 inches is about 49 cubic yards, and cutting and filling a level bench on a slope is sized off the survey rather than a formula. Give us the dimensions or the plan and we will run it with you.

Austin dirt delivery questions
What dirt do I need for a slab in Austin?
East of the escarpment, on Blackland clay, select fill placed in 6 to 8 inch compacted lifts to your engineer's specification. Building the pad out of imported material rather than reworking the expansive clay is standard, because that clay changes volume with its moisture.
Do you deliver gravel in Austin?
Yes. Gravel is available here alongside fill dirt, select fill and topsoil, by the cubic yard. Whether you need a driveway surface or a compacted base under concrete changes the product, so tell us what it is for when you order.
Why is my west Austin lot all rock?
West of the Balcones fault the ground is Austin chalk and limestone with a caliche cap and a thin skin of soil. Excavation is a rock job, there is little native topsoil, and a level place to build often has to be cut and filled. Western lots import both topsoil and fill for that reason.
Do you deliver to Round Rock, Cedar Park and Georgetown?
Yes. We list Austin, Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, Buda, Kyle and Manor. The suburbs and acreage around them are generally reachable, and coverage is a haul distance question rather than a city limit.
How soon can you deliver in Austin?
Most orders run 1 to 3 days from stock. On very large orders of around 500 loads or more we can source to the cheapest supply. East-side clay work moves with the rain, because saturated clay cannot be compacted, and west-side access can decide the truck size.
